“Expanding my Higher Education Knowledge by Obtaining a Master’s Degree in Education”

Skills Gained:

  • Composed multiple projects, papers, reflections, and presentations

  • Built ePortfolio of coursework and examples

  • Conducted research on multiple occasions on various subjects

  • Became well-versed in issues of culture, race, and equity

  • Made professional connections

Lessons Learned: Maintaining a full-time job while pursuing a Master’s degree has been a very tough, but rewarding challenge! It has taken me longer than expected, but I stuck with it and hope that it will pay dividends (literally and figuratively!). Throughout the program, I created multiple bodies of work that not only showcase my communication and leadership qualities, but ones that I am extremely proud of. Being more culturally aware and sensitive, I see myself working with International students in some capacity in the future, perhaps in Study Abroad or International Student Services. Above all, I am thankful for my colleagues and the connections that I made as a result of my enrollment. Without my peers and professors, I may not have found the program as enjoyable or manageable.

Impact: This program changed me both professionally and personally. Within my Admissions position, I was able to use the knowledge and resources from the M.Ed program to actively inform my daily practices. Especially working closely with International students, I adapted multiple cultural perspectives and helped facilitate their entry into the US with an open mind. Other projects taught me more about departments that I knew little about, so they helped me forge new partnerships and increase my understanding and appreciation for what others across the institution do day-to-day. Personally, I am now confident that the skills and knowledge I’ve gained will carry me into my future, no matter what roles or avenues I choose to follow. And of course, I have made some great friends while in the program, and look forward to staying connected.
