“Developing Higher Education Awareness and Skills in Admissions”

Skills Gained:

  • Became exposed to higher education world

  • Worked with faculty & other departments to meet Admissions goals

  • Developed strategies to reach Admissions targets and increase enrollment

  • Gained experience working with International Students

Lessons Learned: Working in admissions has taught me to make connections from my department to the school as a whole. I am able to be strategic in my approaches to my daily tasks, thinking about the overall mission and goals, and how my role functions within the larger structure of the institution and higher education. Bay State was a for-profit school, so Admissions was extremely similar to sales. I learned how to use my customer service skills to effectively recruit students. I also learned how to advise students on career choices, how to collaborate with other departments (especially faculty), how to run events, and much about educational policy. At Boston Architectural College, a not-for-profit private college, we are not as sales-focused, yet are still responsible for generating over 90% of the college’s revenue! I did gain more international experience here, working as a Designated School Official generating Visas, and learned how to utilize online technology platforms to engage students. Overall, I became more aware that we live in an increasingly connected society, and it was exciting to work with students from all across the world.

Impact: Having always had the goal to work in Higher Education, I felt like it was a dream come true when I acquired my first position in the field. The skills that I acquired will become valuable in other positions as I continue to move forward in my career. Working in Admissions also provided me with a great context for some of my signature assignments within the M.Ed program, particularly for the Enrollment, Retention, Graduation, Success class. However, what is most rewarding is the fact that my work directly impacts the lives of individuals every day. It is truly exciting to be a part of another student’s personal and professional journey, especially in the beginning stages. Lastly, I had not realized that I would make some lifelong friendships with others in the field. I am happy that I have expanded my network of connections and can call some of these colleagues my friends for life.
